SIBELIUS SYMPHONY NO. 2. SIBELIUS SYMPHONY NO. 2. 14 December 2019. 07:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Auditorium 3. Tickets
Sibelius’s second symphony, written in 1902, is arguably his best. Certainly, it stands up well more than a century later. The symphony is very much a nineteenth century work, with harmony and melody throughout, and a nice interplay between the string and horn sections.
2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, With Symphony No. 2, Sibelius began to speak his own, personal symphonic language. The music retains the richness of thought and spirit displayed in Hannu Lintu conducts the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2. Jean Sibelius: Symphony No.2 in D As a symphonic composer, Sibelius must be up there as one of the greenest; he was the biggest recycler in the business. His views on the way a symphony should be a sealed unit, generating all its component musical parts from within seem to reach their zenith in this symphony. JEAN SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 43 Jean Sibelius was born in Hämeenlinna (then known by the Swedish name Tavastehus), Finland, on December 8, 1865, and died at Järvenpää, near Helsinki, on September 20, 1957.
From the pulsing, flowing waters at the beginning of the first movement to the heroic themes of the finale, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 takes us on an immense journey. But there’s something about the final movement, with its sweeping melody and rich orchestration that invariably raises the goosebumps on our arms.
Jean Sibelius · Album · 2014 · 4 songs. Colin Davis' conception here of the popular Sibelius Symphony No. 2 (I've not heard any of his other recordings of No. 2, but have read his approach hasn't changed much over the years) is hardly heroic in the grand sense; it's more one of brooding rumination as heard in consistently broad, heavy-handed phrasing and a minimum of overt dynamic variation -- it's also mostly a crushing bore. Symphony No. 2 in D major op. 43. The Second is arguably the most lyrical of Sibelius’s symphonies. There is no slow introduction. It opens with a chordal accompanimental figure out which all the first movement’s thematic complexes are derived.
